Overview: This demonstrator is in the early stages of development by Dr Ben Lloyd-Hughes at the IEA. Drought Watch archives tweets and news stories from around the world which mention the word ‘drought’ as expressed in any of 46 different terms across 26 languages.
Locations are mapped and social media chatter can be compared to traditional drought indices. Natural language processing is used to identify trends and patterns.
Work is ongoing at the IEA to extend the system to monitor other environmental impacts such as floods, fires, windstorms and air quality.
