You’ve heard of book clubs, well here comes Data Skills ‘Book’ Club – all the benefits of self-paced studying in your own time and space with the bonus of meeting up with a friendly community of like-minded people to extend your learning experience.
Already thousands of people around the world have studied this highly regarded course to improve their data skills and learn cutting-edge techniques from the leading experts such as Prof Ed Hawkins, the scientist behind the famous Climate Stripes.
A new dimension for online learning
Big Data & The Environment was produced by the Reading-based Institute for Environmental Analytics (IEA) and the University of Reading and for this new run we are linking up with Reading’s newest life-long learning hub, The Curious Lounge to add a face-to-face dimension.
The Curious Lounge is an exciting new skills and event hub featuring a programme of exceptional speakers, events and training around technical, creative and digital skills, just 2 minutes’ walk from Reading station. You can grab a coffee, enjoy the chat and meet new people who are interested in the same things that you are.
Get more out of Big Data & The Environment
In the same way that book club members meet in a social setting to explore themes, ideas and reactions to a book, meeting each week at The Curious Lounge is an opportunity for people studying Big Data & The Environment, or thinking about joining, to do the same, once a week for the 3 week run of the course. If you can’t start on Monday, November 4th, don’t panic, there is a 6-week study window because we know that there are lots of demands on our busy lives, so it is the perfect way to fit learning new skills around your job, education, family and social life!
Vicky Lucas, the course Editor and Training Manager at the (IEA), will start an informal discussion around the course content, answer questions and motivating your learning in a friendly and sociable setting. The importance of open data, the challenges of working with data, how it affects our everyday lives, the potential benefits for business and career paths will be just a few of the topics covered.
Gain new skills or become a citizen scientist
Formerly a weather forecaster and air quality scientist, Vicky combines a scientific knowledge with a passion for training. Vicky has worked around the world, from teaching English in Brazil, to developing air quality policy in New Zealand to forecasting in the Antarctic.
From urban planning to monitoring wildlife, Big Data & The Environment explores the complexities of managing and analysing big data to seek innovative solutions and applying data analytics to business, even creating exciting new commercial and start-up ideas!
Whatever your background or age, wherever you are, you can gain new skills, update existing ones and learn how to use data to protect our environment from threats including climate change, whether you are applying for a new job or want to join the growing community of citizen scientists.
